BARMM strengthens disaster preparedness in Maguindanao

CITY OF COTABATO: The Bangsamoro government conducted simultaneous earthquake and tsunami drills in Picong, Lanao del Sur and Datu Blah Sinsuat, Maguindanao on Thursday August 25. Bangsamoro Rapid Emergency Response on Disaster Incidence (Readi) led the activity, in partnership with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Ministry of Health, Local Government Units (LGUs) and security sectors to step up preparedness for natural disasters. BARMM-Readi Executive Assistant, Norhashim Sinarimbo, highlighted the importance of disaster awareness and preparedness for communities in Bangsamoro, especially regarding “what to do during an earthquake and ‘a tsunami’. Picong LGU representative Mamintal Balindong Jr. said the simulation activity is important for their community as their city is prone to tsunamis and earthquakes. Balindong also mentioned that vehicles from his municipal disaster risk reduction management office are ready to take evacuees to the evacuation center in case of an emergency. “We are grateful to have a preparedness exercise for the LGU and the community. We will also conduct this simulation in other barangays,” he added. In recent months, several earthquakes have been felt on the island of Mindanao, reminding people of the 8.0 magnitude earthquake in the Moro Gulf which claimed the lives of thousands of people four years ago. decades.
