Girls’ night out ‘in ruins’ after Devon take-out disaster

Diners who ordered from a takeout from Cullompton say a birthday party was ruined after they were served “cold and raw” chicken – despite the place insisting that this has never been the case.

Bryony Cude, 16, and a group of friends bought three chicken kormas as part of a £ 45 order from Indian restaurant Ali Raj.

She says they waited 90 minutes and claimed the meal was obviously undercooked.

The group then called the restaurant to request a refund – and their request was denied.

Owner and chef Shafique Uddin insisted the chicken was not raw and simply discolored – and even accused the girls of playing a joke and “smoking or drinking” when they insisted on being reimbursed.

Bryony’s dad Simon Cude from Cullompton said: “My daughter and a few of her friends got together for one of the girl’s birthdays and instead of going out like normal teenagers they decided to ‘organize a girls night out with a take-out.

“They ordered the food they wanted and paid for it with their own money – which they earned by working for different places.

“They waited over an hour for the food to arrive, which they understood, with the take out being busy on a Saturday night.

“When the food arrived it was very cold, so the girls had no problem and reheated it in the microwave, only to find the food was not well cooked and the chicken was raw. “

Simon said the group then called the restaurant during what turned into a 20-minute conversation with a driver sent to pick up the chicken and bring it back to the restaurant for examination.

The girls then got a phone call telling them the chicken was not raw.

He said: “They called Ali Raj Takeaway and explained that the food was not cooked and asked if they could have a replacement for the food or a refund – this was flatly refused saying the girls had probably smoked or drunk.

“He then asked one of his drivers to pick up the uncooked chicken, which he did, and then he told the girls that there was nothing wrong with that and that they will not receive no reimbursement or replacement food.

“As you can imagine, a small group of girls who choose to spend an evening instead of going out with other friends have been ruined.

“I think the way he handled the situation and the way he talked to the girls was just as bad as the food.”

Indian restaurant Ali Raj has since been contacted to respond to the allegations and confirm that the curry in the pictures is theirs.

Owner and chef Shafique Uddin said: “We have served over 25 korma chickens, if the chicken was to be raw I should have been inundated with complaints as we precook the chicken and serve it in the evening.

“I said I would send a driver and he can pick up the dish and we can check it ourselves, so we sent the driver over and he picked up the chicken and I looked at him, they l ‘actually chopped up – tore the chicken at the top.

“I saw the chicken but it was not raw, you know sometimes when you get colored pieces, it’s not all going to be white, there is going to be a dark spot.

“Every time you cook this chicken the dark spot gets even darker but they thought it was raw and I kept telling them it was not raw – my driver ate the chicken .

“I said I could give you a chicken korma next time and she said” oh no we want our full refund “and said I couldn’t do that because the chicken is not believed in the first place.

“This piece is brown – not all chicken breasts will be white.”

When asked if he asked Bryony if she drank or smoked, he replied, “Yes, I said that because our conversation lasted over 20 minutes.

“I thought they must have been a little drunk or something because they weren’t listening to me.

“I said is that a prank call she said ‘no’ and I said though it looks like that because all you want is a full refund.

“I said the chicken was not raw so I can’t give you a full refund – I have nothing to hide.”
