helping the most vulnerable through disaster preparedness

Nepal was devastated by unprecedented monsoon floods in October 2021. They affected large numbers of Nepalese across the country, especially those who were already vulnerable.

Together with the Nepalese Red Cross and the Danish Red Cross, the EU ensured that national social security structures were ready to provide humanitarian cash assistance to families affected by the floods.

Nepal is particularly prone to seasonal monsoon floods. When unprecedented heavy rains hit the country in October 2021 after a wet monsoon season, the ensuing floods affected many Nepalese across the country.

The floods and subsequent mudslides caused severe damage to several homes and facilities. “I can’t even cook in my kitchen anymore. Since the flood, I mainly cook outside my house,” said Ganga Kami whose house was partly buried.

Apart from the floods which damaged their homes, many Nepalese also had to lose their crops and livelihoods. Thanks to EU humanitarian funding, the Nepalese Red Cross and the Danish Red Cross were able to provide immediate cash assistance to affected families.

As part of a specific EU humanitarian project, the Red Cross had already engaged in cooperation with the Nepalese government before the floods to ensure that existing government structures provide rapid assistance in the event of an emergency.

As part of this initiative, the Nepal Red Cross has provided cash assistance to flood affected people through the government’s social security grant system, which targets the most vulnerable people in a timely manner.
