Like all things Muji, minimalism and having only what is necessary are essential here.
Known for his plain and simple designs, Muji has transformed beyond a brand of minimalism into a true lifestyle. From sustainable snacks to even homes, it seems a retailer’s powerhouse has products covering all aspects of life, and so unsurprisingly Muji has also recently relaunched its own range of disaster preparedness kits.
▼ Called “Itsumo Moshimo” or literally “The Always If” in English, the kits come in undecorated and unfussy packaging according to standard Muji tradition.
In total, the retailer will offer three pencil caseswhich differ in size depending on the specific Muji products included, and the products themselves are all useful items to have in case of an emergency.
The first and smallest kit, called the “Portable Set”, contains a small selection of products and will be priced at 990 yen (9.01 USD). This kit contains bandages, a plastic pouch, antibacterial wipes, face masks, a special Itsu no Moshimo handkerchief, as well as an emergency contact guide. For the emergency contact guide, there are even instructions on how to contact local authorities, whether you’re using a smartphone or payphone.
Then the second kit is the “To-go set.” The on-the-go set includes all the items in the portable set plus a space blanket, earplugs, headlamp, and a shoulder bag to store everything in. At the price of 3,990 yen (US$36.30)this kit also comes in waterproof packaging and with a handle for easy grabbing in case you need to rush out of the house during the bug out.
Finally, the third and largest kit offered by Muji is the “Set of furniture.” All of the items included in the portable set and take-out set are available in this kit, and the furniture set will also include gloves, mini candles, emergency toiletry kits, and towels. Compared to the other two kits, this one comes in a sturdy cardboard box instead. With 15 items in total, the furniture set will retail for 5,490 yen (US$49.94).
In addition to the three main kits, Muji will also separately sell a 11-pocket parka and the collection special “Itsumo no Moshimo” tissue. The parka is waterproof and designed to keep you warm in case you find yourself homeless after a disaster, and the handkerchief comes with a whimsical graphic showing all the ways it can be used. They will be respectively sold at 6,990 yen (63.57 USD) and 490 yen (4.46 USD).
All kits and separately sold items can be found at your local Muji store in Japan. Additionally, Muji will be launching an “Itsu no Moshimo” series where every month a new product will be released related to disaster preparedness, and you can find out more here. Finally, since disasters differ by region, disaster preparedness may look different for you, so be sure to consult with local authorities on the appropriate measures as well as the best place to evacuate if the situation calls for it. .
