Brentford’s Ivan Toney celebrates after the Premier League game – Norwich City v Brentford

Rangers haven’t had a resounding success in the transfer market recently as many signings simply haven’t made it into the starting XI and only a few genuinely improve Ibrox’s first team.

As well as a sense of regret for the players they’ve invested in, they may also regret those who slipped away in terms of potential signings that didn’t materialize.

Ross Wilson Disaster

Brentford striker Ivan Toney is one of the players the club will be disgusted to have missed out on. The 31k-p/w sharpshooter – who was hailed a ‘lion’ by his manager Thomas Frank after a stellar start to his Premier League career – could easily have ended up in Glasgow.

As Toney plied his trade at Peterborough in 2020, Rangers were linked with a move for the striker, who admitted he was close to accepting a move to Ibrox. However, he instead signed for Brentford and scored a rather ridiculous 47 goals in just 85 appearances (0.55 per game) for the west Londoners.

There’s no doubt the 26-year-old would have enjoyed fantastic success at Glasgow. Instead of signing Toney, Steven Gerrard secured the services of Kemar Roofe, and although the Jamaican was good at spells for the Ibrox side, in retrospect the Bees marksman would have been the better signing.

Roofe plundered a solid 34 goals in 71 appearances for the club (0.48 per game), but his injury-prone nature often hampers the team, and this comeback could have been much better had he been fitter. often.

There’s no chance Rangers will sign Toney now, whose market value is £31.5m, and it’s another missed opportunity for Ross Wilson.

With this season’s Premiership winners more than likely qualifying for next season’s Champions League group stage, Toney’s goals could have made a huge difference had they been for Gers, especially with Alfredo Morelos missing the last bit of the season due to injury.

Hopefully another mistake like this doesn’t happen again in the future.
